Week 1 pt 3Feb 10-??, 2006 |
Spent morning roughing out outline of a paper for the book "Innovative Teaching in Sustainable Development". The core will be a comparison between this project and the abortive one in Central America a few years back. I have done a link to some work on this from the Tale of Contents with hopes that I might get some comments form IRD students.
Took an auto up to Adhya, my local centre, for lunch. As always, the longer you stay somewhere, the more you see and the less attention people pay to you wandering about. The key word for the whole city is temple, they are everywhere and in every size.

Roof top sculptures on a new temple being built round an old banyan tree. This is one I saw briefly a couple of days ago. One striking feature is the sheer quality of the finishes on these religious buildings compared to the appalling quality of some of the municipal buildings. |

One of the workers painting inside the temple. Strong colouring and no pattern or guide that I could see. The entire building is moulded concrete, painted on every surface. It will be interesting to see how far they get in my time. The outside below the roof sculpture is still completely bare. |

Temples can just be a single statue under a tree. Here there is a small room behind the grill, with a garlanded statue in it. Shiva's trident in front has three citrus fruits impaled on it. The white rice powder pattern on the pavements are used every where in front of doors to shops, temples and houses. I don't know much about them. |
