GIS education in South India: research in progress

Abstract to EUGISES conference (submitted and pending):

Research in progress:

The author will be taking a 10 week study sabbatical with the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Tamil Nadu, southern India, from February to April 2006. His prime areas of study will be the “Information Village Project” where advanced ICT technologies have been used to get empowering information and knowledge into remote rural villages. He will also be looking at how GIS is being used in local rural development. This will include ways in which GIS has been used in addressing problems resulting from the tsunami of 2004, which severely damaged the coastal region of Tamil Nadu and destroyed some of the information villages themselves.

During this sabbatical he will be visiting universities and colleges in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry to see how GIS and other spatial technologies are being used and taught in Indian education in that region. This paper will present those findings to European colleagues at EUGISES 2006 both as a subject of interest and as a step in forging collaborative links between GIS educators in Europe and South Asia.
