Interesting cultural study here. The Ganesha Ratha is one of the oldest monolithic temples in Mahabalipuram, very close to the Penance Relief. I took the photo and painted the sketch from more or less the same spot at the same time. Which is the  better record? A photo gets the detail, but when you draw something, no matter how badly, you really have to look at it.

Sketching also puts you in touch with people whether you like it or not. As the scribble at the bottom of the sketch says, "Lots of audience!" I had scrambled up to the top of a boulder and thought I would be left alone up there. No chance. About eight schoolboys scrambled up to watch, followed by a police officer, who I thought was going to arrest me, but he just wanted to look. No one takes an interest in your photos, because everyone is taking them.
