My wife and I own "Sarah", Westcoast Sail No 2,
and attach a pic of Sarah taken at Emsworth by the previous owner.
You may be interested in the following history as
known to me of some of the Westcoast 16s:
The builders were Bill Winter and Eric Bergquvist.
Westcoast 16 Sail No 1 was a prototype, which I
understand never sailed.
Westcoast 16 Sail No 2, gaff rigged, was built in
1982 by the above two in conjunction with Martin Royle for his own use. He
named her "Sarah" after his grandmother. It was later sold to Mr Graham Brown
of Coombe near Truro, and in 1990 was purchased by Paul Cull who sailed her
from Emsworth and in Cornwall, but "Sarah" sat on her trailer for 7 years from
about 2003 in a garage at Newham, Truro, until 2010 when my wife and I bought
her. In 2010 she was afloat on the Carrick
Roads, but I only sailed her once as I was not well, and was also busy with
other matters. She is now completing a refit at Sam Heard's Yard in Mylor,
and I hope to sail her on Carrick Roads this summer.
We have met the owners of "Shadow", Westcoast 16
Sail no 3, a gunter rigged boat, who are a lovely couple from Lands End, and
who sail her also from Carrick Roads, and by coincidence, from a mooring only
about a quarter of a mile from ours.
I do not know anything about Westcoast Sail No 4 ?
I was fascinated to see the picture of Westcoast
16, Sail No 5, "Ratty", taken in 2007, on your website, and wonder if you are
still in contact with the owner?
I presume that there was a Westcoast Sail No 6, as
Paul Cull told me that 6 were built. Again, I know nothing of this one ?
Martin Royle, however, said 7 were built.
Then Bill Winter sold the rights to Eric, who
worked principally in glass, and redeveloped the design into the Winkle Brig
until he retired.
