Exterior finishing of: The boat is turned over
again and painting the outside started. First, sanding and smoothing all
areas that can be reached. Then a first rolled on coat of white undercoat.
After this cured, a coat of half-and-half undercoat and top coat (which will
be International Toplac Rustic Red. I thought the brilliant Rochelle red
would be a bit to over the top for my big boat.)
The half-and-half coat applied. It looks cherry pink and quite glossy, but
not as glossy as this picture makes it seem. Dips and scratches in teh hull
show up clearly at this stage, but none need treating. The boat is over
quarter of a century old, so I am not looking for perfection. It would call
for more time and patience than I have. I will apply two topcoats. The first
will have a little bit of white stirred in, just so I can see the difference
when I apply the final coat.

Lovely sunny but cold day. I just managed to grab time to
roll on first full coat of Rustic red. Hope it wasn't too cold. The
undercoat shows through in places, so a second coat will be needed. But even
one coat looks good. Rolling again gives a much better finish than I ever
achieved with a brush.
Jan 23, 2009,
second coat of topcoat finally applied. Rustic Red is not highly
pigmented and in some areas the undercoat still smiles through, but it looks
OK. i managed to scratch it anyway turning it back over (it is really heavy)
and the gunwales needed a lot of touching up after the masking tape was
pulled off.
