8: Inside the cabin
I want to be able to sit upright and to stretch out full
length, not necessarily at the same time. Most other things I can compromise
around, but I am 6ft 3in tall. I shall add a few things here about the cabin
as I think of them. Re-reading Maurice Griffiths Swatchways and Little
Ships, I also remembered the importance of being able to sit up on a
berth to read comfortably. If you can do that, lack of foot room around a
centre board box is much less important. But to sit up on a bunk, you need
something solid to lean on. Half height bulkhead at the stern end of each
berth are probably called for.
The "galley" needs a removable worktop over it. Use it as a
fixed table most of the time. Lift it off to use the sink and cooker and fit
a leg to its underside so it can be placed in a socket as a cabin table or
cockpit table. Every bit of a boat should serve at least two functions to
earn its keep.
