6: Companionway

How do you get in? I am still thinking about whether a sliding hatch is needed or not. I am impressed by the simplicity of the Cardigan Bay Lugger's large sloping opening and wonder if it would work on a BayCruiser. It would simplify things and lead to a stronger roof. I don't like washboards. They always seem to jamb on me, and I don't know where to put them. I like the idea of part doors. In addition to being easy to store, if you mount your instruments on the inside of them, when they are open you can see them, and when they are shut, they are stored away out of sight.

If the top half is closed with hinged doors, the bottom half can have a hinged washboard which folds down over the bridge deck to give a comfortable seat to sit on with your legs in the cabin and your elbows on the roof, the most comfortable spot on a small boat when you are surplus crew, or just sitting at anchor...
