10: BayCruiser 20 now in the mainstream, Nov 2008
Swallow boats have expanded their website now to include the
BayCruiser 20 as a current boat. It is no longer on the drawing
board. You can see the details on their website at:
http://www.swallowboats.co.uk/content/view/148/118/
It is interesting to see how it has developed. Compared to
the BayRaider, it is 5in (0.12m) longer, 1ft 3in (0.35m) wider and
320lbs (100kg) heavier. So it is a bigger boat all round, but not a BIG
boat. There are likely to be some significant changes to the rig, which all
come about from the presence of the cabin. A single solid mast is possible
to deal with where to stow the topmast. Possibly a conventional Bermudian
main sail to ease reefing from the cockpit. A self tacking jib, but not on a
clubbed foot. Details will be finalised in the next few weeks.

I wanted to include the Cornish Shrimper in this list, but when I went to
check the specification on Select Yachts website (the Shrimper's builder) I
was dismayed to find they had gone into liquidation at the end of October
2008. Not good news at all, and I hope that the firm can be rescued somehow.
The causes were apparently "potential customers waiting for things to
improve" and a big tax bill. The latter I can do nothing about, but for the
former, do as I did, if you are thinking of buying a new boat, do it now.
Things don't improve if you wait, they only improve if you act. There have
to be boat buyers before there can be boat builders.
